SIU Around Campus

Southern Illinois University – Carbondale was originally founded in 1869 as a teaching school. Over the years, it has grown by leaps and bounds to become what it is today.

SIU is currently home to 10 colleges – Agricultural Sciences, Applied Science & Arts, Business, Education & Human Services, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Mass Communication & Media Arts, Science, Law, and Medicine. Between these colleges, there are over 200 academic degrees that students can study. SIU has won multiple awards and honors, including being ranked as one of the top 5 financial institutions, ranked as the top automotive technology program, and housing a forestry department that only falls second to Penn State.

SIU also offers plenty to do around campus. The SIU Student Center hosts multiple restaurants, bowling, billiards, and the book store. There are also ballrooms available for rental and study rooms open for students wanting to concentrate on their work. Shryock Auditorium and McLeod theatre are home to many music acts and performances throughout the year. The Student Recreation Center houses state-of-the-art equipment, an olympic-sized pool, basketball courts, weight lifting rooms, personal trainers, and fitness classes. It is also home to the Outdoor Recreation department, where you can rent boats, kayaks, tents, and more, as well as sign up for group outdoor adventures. The Student Health Center, located right next to the Recreation Center, offers state-of-the-art medical, dental, psychological, and optometric care. Students can also attend counseling and group support sessions as needed.
